TOXIC MOLD

The term "toxic mold" refers to molds that produce mycotoxins, such as Stachybotrys chartarum, not to all molds. Exposure to high levels of mycotoxins can lead to neurological problems and in some cases death. Prolonged exposure, e.g., daily workplace exposure, can be particularly harmful.

Mold health issues are potentially harmful effects of molds (US usage; British English "moulds").

Molds are ubiquitous in the biosphere, and mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. The vast majority of molds are not hazardous to humans, and reaction to molds can vary between individuals, with relatively minor allergic reactions being the most common.

Nonetheless, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reported in its June 2006 report, 'Mold Prevention Strategies and Possible Health Effects in the Aftermath of Hurricanes and Major Floods,' that "excessive exposure to mold-contaminated materials can cause adverse health effects in susceptible persons regardless of the type of mold or the extent of contamination.

When mold spores are present in abnormally high quantities, they can present especially hazardous health risks to humans after prolonged exposure, including allergic reactions or poisoning by
mycotoxins, or causing fungal infection (mycosis).

There are more than 100,000 different types of molds, including black mold and toxic varieties. Mold affects health by releasing spores into the air to seed new colonies. When inhaled, mold spores can cause chronic allergies, headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, throat and eye irritations, wheezing, and many respiratory problems.

NOTE:

Homeowners insurance usually covers mold

damage if it was caused by a "covered peril." Otherwise, an insurance company will likely
not cover mold damage. ...

Home insurance policies usually don't cover mold that resulted from a preventable water leak, flooding, or high humidity.

Please  refer to your policy or contact your insurance provider to determine what your policy will and will not cover.

Mold on Insulation

There is no single type of mold called “black mold” — many molds are black. When people use the term, they may be referring to a type a specific type of mold called Stachybotrys chartarum (S. chartarum), also known as Stachybotrys atra.

In some cases, mold in your

home can make you sick, especially if you or a family membersuffers from allergies or asthma. Whether or not you're allergic to molds, mold exposure
can
irritate your eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs.

Mold on Structure

Mold will also cause unsightly stains and unpleasant odors.

It will not, however, cause structural damage.

Mold tends to grow on surfaces rather than deep into substrates. In order for structural damage to occur, decay fungi, mold's

cousin, need to gain a foothold.
